Deviation Road is one of Australia’s most up-and-coming sparkling wine producers. Based in the Adelaide Hills, the region is one of the coolest climates in South Australia, making it perfect for sparkling wine crafted from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. While some Australian wineries produce small amounts of relatively decent sparkling wine as an afterthought, Deviation Road has focused their entire production around sparkling wines and push it to the highest quality possible. Founder and winemaker Kate Laurie spent years studying at the Lycée Viticole d’Avize in Champagne, specifically to learn from the best, and all her wines are made in the traditional method, capitalizing on the wealth of knowledge she developed from her time in Champagne. The NV Deviation Road “Brut Reserve” is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay with 18 months on the lees and 7g/L of dosage. I found it to be full of toasty character and brightly wound acidity and notes of red fruit, toasted almonds and lemon zest. A fantastic bottle that can go toe-to-toe with Champagne without blinking an eye.
