2018 Domaine des Remizières "Cuvée Emilie" Hermitage

SKU #1553931 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The flagship 2018 Hermitage Cuvée Emilie comes from the upper part of the appellation, in the Les Grandes Vignes lieu-dit, with a splash from the Les Rocoules as well. A beautiful, medium to full-bodied effort from this family, it sports a deep purple hue as well as loads of liquid rock and damp earth-like notes intermixed with plenty of crème de cassis, white flowers, graphite, and spice. With stunning purity, a balanced, elegant texture, ripe tannins, and a lengthy finish, this tight, compact, closed Hermitage needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will drink nicely for two decades or more. 95+ Inner quote mark (11/2020)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2018 Hermitage Cuvee Emilie is a big, beef-scented Syrah matured entirely in new French oak. Sourced from Les Grandes Vignes (80%) and Les Rocoules (20%), it's dark fruited and intense, loaded with notes of cassis, black olives and crushed stone-the oak barely registers, while the finish boasts refreshing notes of licorice. Full-bodied and firmly structured, this wine-which is reminiscent of the excellent 2015-should easily last two decades. (JC) Inner quote mark (5/2021)

94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Piercing black-plum and cassis flavors bristle against a firm granitic spine in this ripe but classically styled Hermitage. Black-fruit flavors are pristine and cutting but restrained in youth still. Freshly balanced in acidity and framed by fine, upright tannins, the wine should approach peak by 2024 and improve well through 2038. *Cellar Selection* (AI) Inner quote mark (7/2021)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark 100% Syrah. Aged for 15 months in new oak. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Very tannic and four-square on the palate, with high acidity and dense black fruit too. Top quality, but it needs long ageing. Monolithic! 17++/20 points (RH) Inner quote mark (10/2019)

K&L Notes

The Desmeures family of Domaine des Remizières are fourth-generation winemakers who originally sold grapes to the local cooperative. After completing their winery in 1974, the family began production at their new property. The estate is now managed by Phillipe Desmeures, his daughter Émilie and son Christophe. They have expanded to 30 hectares with vineyards in Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Hermitage. Émilie now oversees the winemaking, with her brother Christophe tending to the vineyards. We were excited to add them to our lineup of Direct Imports a couple of years ago, especially once Jeb Dunnuck of Wine Advocate proclaimed, "This estate needs to be on every reader’s short list." The wine is 100% Syrah with fruit coming from two sites - Les Grandes Vignes, with vines averaging 40 years of age planted on granitic soils, and Les Rocoules, with vines over 80 years of age planted on alluvial soils. It is fermented in large oak vats and ages in new oak barrels for 15-18 months.

The "Cuvee Emilie" is 100% Syrah with fruit coming from two sites - Les Grandes Vignes with vines averaging 40 years of age planted on granitic soils and Les Rocoules with vines over 80 years of age planted on alluvial soils. The wine is big, bold and beautiful. Densely packed with flavors of cassis, blueberries, cardamom and smoked meats. This is a rich and concentrated wine that will find its happiest place in about a decade, but damn it’s good now!
