2018 Susana Balbo "Signature" Cabernet Sauvignon Uco Valley Mendoza

SKU #1553854 94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This is very tight and focused with purity and beauty, showing blackcurrants, walnuts, dark earth and shitake mushrooms. Full-bodied, tight and integrated. Lovely, creamy texture. Inner quote mark (2/2020)

Outer quote mark I like the varietal purity of the 2018 Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon and the way the palate shows rounder tannins than the 2017 I tasted next to it. It's spicy and peppery, expressive and clean. The oak seems to be better integrated and there is more freshness and better overall balance. (LG) Inner quote mark (10/2019)

92 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Oenologists are well aware that a touch of Malbec softens up a Cabernet Sauvignon. In this case the measure is 5% and both came from Gualtallary, Uco Valley, before being 30% aged in new French barrels. Intense red in the glass with a purple meniscus. The nose delivers aromas of roasted bell pepper, fresh plum and black currant with a hint of mint. But it really comes into its own in the mouth: good body, excellent flow and fruitiness with firm tannins and well-judged intensity of flavor. (JH) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

I should not be surprised with how good this wine is, but I am! Susana Balbo is one of the great winemakers of the world, and almost all of her wines are reasonably priced! What other winemaker, from anywhere else in the world, can you say that about? What caught me off guard with this wine was the aromatics. There is so much going on with this open and generous nose. Cherries, currants, a touch of brambles, soil, mushrooms, herbs, and an array of spices. The palate is balanced with body, pure fruit, spicy framing oak, decent tannins, and a freshness that pulls it all together. The wine practically dances across the palate and finishes with a deep cherry fruit accented with a mellow dusty spice. The very definition of a pleasant surprise!
