Bursting with aromas of cherries, sweet wild berries, coniferous forest floor, spices and smoke, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is medium-bodied, layered and melting, with supple tannins, lively acids, a perfumed core of fruit and a sapid finish. It's the latest installment in what is becoming a series of exquisitely elegant vintages for the Gevrey AOC bottling chez Dugat.
The 2019 portfolio is another resounding success for the increasingly self assured Bertrand Dugat, who began picking on September 9 and who reported alcohol levels ranging between 12.6% and 13.1%—something that should confound any of the insufficiently informed stereotypes that already begin to circulate about this very fine vintage. The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village, raised in 40% new oak, has a very pure and charming bouquet, the pure black cherries commingling with raspberry and subtle floral scents. The palate is well balanced with crunchy red berry fruit and a pinch of white pepper. This is a little compact at the moment, yet there is wonderful precision from start to finish. Excellent. (NM)

There is just enough wood lurking in the background of the equally fresh red berry, sauvage and earth-scented aromas to comment on. There is fine richness and outstanding punch to the concentrated and moderately serious flavors that culminate in a youthfully austere and sneaky long finale. This balanced effort should age well and if it can add depth, it should merit the upper portion of my projected range.
