Nicole Austin hasn’t rested on her laurels since George Dickel Bottled in Bond won Whisky of the Year in 2019, continuing to create great and affordable whiskeys at Cascade Hollow Distillery. This is notably a bourbon rather than a Tennessee whiskey, though the criteria for the two styles mostly overlap. The nose is nutty and well spiced, with caramel corn, toasted pecans, cinnamon graham crackers, cherry tart, and butterscotch candies. There is a friendliness to the palate that makes it ideal for outdoor imbibing, with notes of spearmint, mixed berries, nougat, and honey. Big spice on the finish makes this a memorable sip. —Ted Simmons
K&L Notes
#5 Whiskey Advocate's Top 20 of 2021. This small batch bourbon is the first Dickel product to be labelled as "bourbon." While most products from the Dickel line qualify under both Tennessee whisky and bourbon, only now is the famous old brand including that speical word on their label. This nicely aged release from the great distillery in Cascade Hollow is also one of the first younger age stated whiskies to be released by the storied brand in the modern era. Incredibly round and featuring classic bourbon aromas of vanilla, orange, bright cherry and complex oak. Aged in charred oak barrels for a minimum of 8 years and bottled at 90 proof.
