2018 Beaulieu Vineyard "Reserve" Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $76)

SKU #1551071 96 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This is so aromatic with redcurrants, flowers and crushed stones. Some bark and rose stem, too. Full-bodied, yet so refined and textured with a lovely finish of fruit and hints of berry and light chocolate. So delicious now, but will develop nicely in the bottle. Inner quote mark (6/2021)

Outer quote mark The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Reserve is a deeper, richer wine with impressive chocolatey blackcurrant fruits as well as lots of tobacco, damp earth, camphor, and new leather-like aromas and flavors. It’s beautifully textured and medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins and a great finish. I’d be thrilled to drink bottles any time over the coming 10-15 years or more. Inner quote mark (1/2021)

Outer quote mark The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Reserve is compelling. Dark cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and spice are some of the many aromas and flavors that open in the glass. Rich and sumptuous to the core, the 2018 hits all the right notes. The Rutherford Reserve is sourced mostly from BV #1 and BV #2. Bright acids perk up the finish. Think of the Rutherford Reserve as a baby Georges de Latour that can be enjoyed pretty much on release. (AG) Inner quote mark (1/2021)

94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Tasting of blackberry and toasted oak, this richly layered wine is sumptuously built, with soft, well-integrated tannins. Elements of tobacco, cedar and sage figure into the fruity foundation, powerful in style with lasting grace. (VB) Inner quote mark (11/2021)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Rich and broad in style, featuring a wave of warmed cassis and dark plum fruit flavors scored with licorice, sassafras and singed alder. Everything is knit tightly through the lengthy finish, where a bolt of iron courses underneath for extra support. Best from 2023 through 2037. (JM) Inner quote mark (12/2021)

To be honest I don't think I can sum up this wine any better than Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media did with his review when he wrote: "Think of the Rutherford Reserve as a baby Georges de Latour that can be enjoyed pretty much on release." I mean this is literally a less structured version of the iconic George de Latour. It comes from the very same vineyards, the historic BV Ranches #1 and #2 on the western Rutherford bench. It's made the same way but the same winemaking team. The only real difference is that it's blended from lots that are less tannic and have more accessible up-front fruit. Tasted side-by-side at the store in Redwood City, several K&L staffers actually preferred how the Rutherford Reserve was drinking over the twice as expensive Georges de Latour! The wine is bold and dense with rich red to black fruit, lots of dusty loamy earth, some juicer notes of cassis and Loganberry emerge with air. Crème de Cacao and espresso notes join the foray with hints of oak spice and pipe tobacco. Full bodied, but not overly so, this shows real class and pedigree well beyond its price tag. A beautiful, heavy, screen printed bottle and some big scores from top critics put this toward the top of my holiday gift giving list, very hard to beat for the money, it's got prestige and genuine quality in the bottle to boot.
Drink from 2021 to 2030
