Stellum "Cygnus H4" K&L Exclusive Cask Strength Single Barrel Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1549379

The wonderful Stellum whiskies are fabulous additions to the current bourbon scape. They're devoted to bringing American whiskey into the modern age with a dogmatic attention to detail. Stellum is a distinct project from Barrell, but uses the same exceptional team to select these special barrels with the utmost care. This team is renowned for selecting and blending exceptional casks (they've got the awards to prove it), but in order to create a great blend you need to start with excellent components. This is one of their finest—a bourbon distilled at MGP specifically for Barrell. They've been extremely careful with these stocks, and we were lucky enough to get access to one of the very first single barrels. The Cygnus H4 is MGP's 36% rye distilled in July 2015.

This lovely barrel from the new Stellum brand is a unique and unabashed expression of the fabulous and seemingly ubiquitous distillery in Southern Indiana. This particular barrel was selected by my colleague Andrew Whiteley and is best paired next to its sister cask "Cygnus A9" for an example of the diversity and quality of these excellent stocks. The color is amber. A wonderfully inviting nose that shows both the sweetness and bold rye spice in balance together. Obvious notes of caraway and dill that remain restrained and frame the sweet orange peel, buttered corned bread, brown sugar and black tea aromas on the nose. The palate builds on the woody elements of the nose revealing some serious wood along with some exotic spice. Lots of those tea elements come through and its drier and darker flavored than the A9. A real treat for those who love a heavy rye bourbon or those highlight some of the darker flavors that can sometimes come up in MGPi bourbons.
