Outer quote mark The 1996 St.-Joseph Les Granites was made from incredibly tiny yields of 10-15 hectoliters per hectare. The wine reveals a remarkable liquid mineral/orange marmalade character. This intense, medium to full-bodied, beautifully pure wine should drink well for a decade. What is so amazing about this single-vineyard wine is that it is aged in 100% new oak, but there is very little evidence of wood in the wine, a testament to its extraordinary concentration and richness. In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
