Sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering cherry preserve, red berry, vanilla and rose pastille flavors that spread out slowly on the back half. Let me just say this… the cost of this wine is ridiculous when compared to the quality. Not like this is a new thing--we sell more bottles of Senor de Lesmos Crianza than any other Spanish wine at K&L. We, the staff, have loved this wine for years, singing its praises as one of the best values in Rioja you’ll find anywhere. I was super-excited to taste the 2017 when I saw it come in this morning. What strikes me in particular about this vintage is the way that the fruit, savory undertones, and smokey oak all transform into this pretty expression for Rioja. Almost like there’s elements of cherry, sandalwood, and charcuterie all blending together. On the palate, these flavors continue, maybe getting a touch more leather, with soft tannins, bright fruitiness, and a great finish. There’s no reason that this bottle should be this good at this price.

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
