Outer quote mark I love the serious and balanced 2017 J Alberto, a single-vineyard bottling from a field blend that is mostly Malbec with some 5% Merlot. It fermented with 20% full clusters and natural yeasts for three weeks. It then had an élevage of 11 months, when 15% of the volume was kept in egg-shaped vats, 20% in concrete tanks and the rest in used barriques and demi-muids. It's a moderate 12.5% alcohol and seems to have less influence from oak and better freshness. It has bright acidity and is almost effervescent, with citrus freshness. It is light to medium-bodied with red berry, pomegranate and blood orange freshness. Hans Vinding Diers explained that the end of the fermentation was without skins (they pressed before it finished), which helped to polish the grainy tannins that this wine sometimes has. This is so easy to drink it could be dangerous! It's the lightest, freshest J Alberto I can remember. This is super! (LG) 94+ Inner quote mark (6/2018)

The J Alberto is a 4ha vineyard. It is 95% Malbec with 5%Merlot all ungrafted. Deep is the first thing that comes to mind when smelling this. It is intense but contained. You get the sense of falling into the fruit of this wine, or better yet, sliding, like Fred Flinstone down an Argentinosaurus ridiculously long neck. It is very evocative. The palate is full, broad, with just enough tannin to pull the wine back together on the finish. Intense, the fruit has a saturated cherry/ pomegranate thing, it vibrates and it is concentrated. Beneath the fruit is a very fine spice that speaks to the quality and the age of the oak that it was aged in. This is an incredible Malbec, that tastes nothing like its Northern brethren. It tastes like dinosaur wine.

Malbec

- These days if you're drinking a Malbec it's probably from Argentina. The most planted grape in that country, varietally-labeled Argentine Malbecs are one of the wine market's great values, prized for their slight herbal component and dark, luscious fruit. Structurally, Argentina's Malbecs are much different than those grown in the grape's native France; they are riper, fruitier and fleshier. In France, the best iterations of Malbec can be found in the Cahors, where it can be quite decadent. It is also planted in the Loire Valley, where it is called Côt and is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon or Gamay, and in Bordeaux, where it has fallen from favor in many of the region's great blends because it is difficult to grow. In the United States, the varietal is frequently added to Meritage wines - Bordeaux style blends - but it is rarely found on its own.

Considerable investments (much of which has come from famous French, Italian and California wine producers) have been made in new vineyards and winemaking technology in the past several years, which along with recent plantings of more premium varieties of grapes, has made Argentina much more competitive internationally. The Mendoza region is the most important region in Argentina's wine industry. And Malbec, among other Bordeaux varietals grown here, reigns supreme.
