2018 Marietta "Gibson Block" McDowell Valley Mendocino Syrah

SKU #1547689 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2018 Gibson Block Syrah comes from very old vines interplanted with other varieties like Grenache, Trousseau Noir and Mission. They are dry-farmed, picked together and co-fermented. It has a deep ruby-purple color and deep, layered aromas of tar, earth, blackcurrant liqueur, cast iron and dried violets. The full-bodied palate bursts with juicy acidity, sparks of Luxardo cherry and a silky, rounded mouthfeel. It finishes very long and perfumed. (EB) Inner quote mark (6/2021)

94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Blackberry, black-licorice and tar aromas follow through to a full body with round, soft tannins that are reserved and focused. Fresh finish. Rich and spicy at the end with a slight meatiness. Inner quote mark (7/2021)

When I tasted the line of Marietta wines last week I was blown away! The wines all feature loads of dark, sweet ripe fruit that is both impressive and effusive. I've been a huge fan of the "Old Vine Red" for 30 years but was shocked by the '18 "Christo" Rhône Blend, '18 "Armé" Cabernet, '18 "Gibson" Syrah, and '19 "Román" Zin. These may be the greatest California red wine values in my 40 plus years here at K&L.

Wow! I love this wine year after year, but the 2018 is truly something special. Plucked from the oldest Syrah vines in California (approaching 150 years of age), this wine has all the hallmark traits of great Syrah with a bit of old-vine density and gravitas for good measure. A lifted, floral nose with earthy spices. Dark blue to black fruits, blackberry, mulberry, graphite, wood smoke, and cracked peppercorn. Quite rich and mouth-filling, but fine, grippy tannins and great acidity give freshness and energy on the palate. It's quite young right now, but already showing world-class pedigree. It's generous enough to enjoy young while the primary, boisterous black fruit coats the tannins. I'd try it with a hearty cut of red meat, or you could certainly age it beautifully for 10-15 years if you like a more elegant, supple expression of Syrah. All in all, a very special wine from a one-of-a-kind vineyard.
Top Value! Drink from 2021 to 2035
