Deadwood "Tumbling Dice" K&L Exclusive 5 Year Old Cask #58A Cask Strength MGP Indiana Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1547432

The arc of MGP's journey in the bourbon world has come full circle. Years ago, the distillery (then called LDI), provided many aged bourbons for start up distillers looking to sell quality product from the get-go and generate some revenue without resorting to gin or vodka distillation. There was a backlash against MGP products as many young distilleries naively sold this product as their own, misrepresenting where it came from. That faded relatively quickly as people realized this distillate was excellent, well aged, and affordable. The ensuing bourbon boom essentially decimated MGP stocks around the country as brands like Smooth Ambler sold through their contracted stocks much faster than originally anticipated. Today, MGP distillate of any notable age is often extremely expensive, and if you want to get into the bourbon game, you likely need to look elsewhere for already-aged stocks. Fortunately, some saw this writing on the wall earlier than others, and they locked up new-make spirit from MGP years ago so they would be prepared with quality bourbon. This is just such a barrel. Delicious, intense, and priced just right, this barrel comes to K&L under the Tumbling Dice label—a label that has bottled many collectibles over the years. The heavy rye mash bill is 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley. This barrel comes from the same lot of barrels as the recent Best Single Barrel Bourbon winner at the 2021 World Whiskies Awards. Bottled at 117 proof.

A massive spice attack immediately confirms the very high rye mashbill. It's amplified by the 58.5%ABV, but it's not so high as to cover all of the natural sweetness you'd hope for in a great Bourbon. It almost drinks backwards from what you might expect - beginning very spicy and getting sweeter as you go. The nose is a mishmash of black pepper, dill, hay, cinnamon, nutmeg, corn flour, and even a touch of cayenne. It slides into honey and cornbread on the palate and widens into more caramels and maple syrup. If you add a touch of water you release a massive quantity of oil broaden the texture further still. On the final sip you do come back around to a bright and spicy finish after all that sweet midpalate. It's a lovely bourbon that showcases why MGP has been such a driving force in the Bourbon boom and why those who managed to secure new make or very young stocks years ago and bring them to maturity are going to be tomorrow's big winners.
