This wine ranks as one of our "best buys" and it deserves to be one of our best sellers. The glass is filled with telltale Zinfandel notes of wild berry preserves. There's a dash of spice and a whiff of dried herbs. It all comes together quite nicely rounded out by a touch of Barbera for added zestiness and a pinch of Petite Sirah for structure. You'd be hard pressed to find such a serious and savory wine for under $20.

When I tasted the line of Marietta wines last week I was blown away! The wines all feature loads of dark, sweet ripe fruit that is both impressive and effusive. I've been a huge fan of the "Old Vine Red" for 30 years but was shocked by the '18 "Christo" Rhône Blend, '18 "Armé" Cabernet, '18 "Gibson" Syrah, and '19 "Román" Zin. These may be the greatest California red wine values in my 40 plus years here at K&L.

One of the best values you're likely to find anywhere. Here at K&L we've been longtime believers and supporters of Marietta. We've known for many years that these wines over-deliver time and time again, and they've been consistent "Staff Picks" in all of our stores. So imagine our delight when a recent edition of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate bestowed enormous scores upon the wines! I mean, how often do you see $20 wines get 95 points from the Wine Advocate!? It's a truly a unicorn wine. And the best part, it's truly deserved. Marietta's "Román" bottling is a selection of some of their finest barrels of estate grown Zinfandel (with a splash of Petite Sirah and Barbera,) named in homage to their longtime Cellar Master, Román Cisneros. This bottling is about the craft of making a truly special wine, blending fruit from McDowell Valley, Yorkville Highlands and Alexander Valley to create the best expression of the vintage. The wine is broad, powerful, and layered. The nose is wonderfully open and expressive with floral high notes and crushed summer berries. On the palate there's tons of those ripe berry fruits, blackberry, olallieberry, raspberry preserve. There's mulling spice too. Then warm earth and and woodsy spice tones. Medium to full bodied, richly fruited, but plenty of energy and vibrancy too. A truly complete bottle of wine. The perfect burger / BBQ wine. A unrivalled bargain given the quality in the bottle and huge critical acclaim.

Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.

The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
