2011 Beronia Gran Reserva Rioja (Previously $28)

SKU #1544960 93 points Decanter

Outer quote mark A very juicy, fruity Rioja: plump with plums and vanilla cream, softened by some tertiary character. Notes of oak lurk underneath. Long finish, a little spicy, with supple tannins. No wonder it’s a popular classic. Not built for the long haul in a dark cellar. (SJE) Inner quote mark (8/2020)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This maturing red retains freshness, with a plump texture and lively flavors. Currant, cocoa, licorice and loamy earth notes are supported by gentle tannins and orange peel acidity. Gentle, yet deep and focused. Not showy, but complete. (TM) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

92 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Wonderfully refined and polished with compact fruit and ripe tannins. Medium body. Fine and caressing. Lovely ripe fruit, too. Lovely example of this vintage. Inner quote mark (6/2019)

91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Vivid ruby-red. Smoke-accented red fruits and candied flowers on the nose, with vanilla and licorice nuances in the background. Smooth and seamless in texture, offering raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of mocha. A tobacco note appears on the finish, which features supple tannins and lingering spiciness.(JR) Inner quote mark (4/2021)

This is a steal of a deal on a decadent, decade-old Gran Reserva just now reaching its prime drinking window. It has intense aromatics of cherries, plums, cocoa, savory herbs, smoked meat and violets. The fruit is youthful and lively on the palate and is fully integrated with baking spice, toast and earth. The tannins are pure luxury - ripe and silky, and present on the long finish.

This is classic mature old school Rioja with flavors of dark fruits, leather and coffee all balanced by refreshing acidity. The fruit is sweet with spices such as nutmeg and mace. This Rioja is mature, yet with plenty of fruit and body to last for years to come. This drinks well now and would be perfect with classic Spanish foods or any roasted meats.

The nose on this wine is a wild ride. Right out of the gates it is dark cherry compote with the buttery, spicy crumbles from the top of a coffee cake. It then turns dark and savory with smoked cherries, a fine spice, and subtle dried herbs. The palate is deep and rich with dark cherry fruit that has remarkable freshness for being ten years old. There are layers of leather, earth, spice, and a hint of chocolate. Round and subtly framed, there is nothing rigid or soft with this wine. It is settled in and matured but not even approaching old. This wine was only aged in French oak—the subtlety of the spice and the intensity of the fruit are proof of this pedigree. It has a fine, very persistent finish where the fruit lingers with a savory edge. This wine shows exactly why I love Rioja. What other region produces such long-lived wines and releases them to market only once they're fully mature, and at such outstanding prices?! Drink this tonight with a 30-minute decant or age in your cellar for at least another decade.

I don't think you need many words to explain why a $28 Gran Reserva is worth your money, but I will persist none the less! We start with coffee cake and cherry compote on the nose—it's as mouthwatering as it sounds. There are darker notes of buttered toast, almond, and baking spice. The palate is lively with dark cherry and baking spice marrying well with barrel char, slight roasted meat, and soft violet. This is a killer wine at any price and has YEARS ahead of it, but at $28 it is a no-brainer!

I like this Rioja. It is ready to drink now, offering layers of flavors with balance and structure. There is a lot going on in this wine. It will be especially good with food.

A gran reserva that is both beautifully ripe and surprisingly fresh. The fruit notes are dark and rich—tons of black cherry, blueberry, figs, and currants flow seamlessly into more savory flavors of tarragon, cedar, leather, dark chocolate, and tobacco leaf. The bright acidity keeps things from getting heavy. The tannins are super refined, giving it a silky and luxurious mouthfeel. It's hard to see a better place to spend $28 for a mature red to pair with your next steak.
