St. George 2020 "Reserve" California Apple Brandy (750ml)

St. George has a legacy of fruit brandies going back to the very beginning in 1982. This incredible apple brandy showcasess a field blend of apples from a single famly owned farm in Mendocino county. Apple varieties include Fall Pippin, Jonathan, Golden Delicious, Black Arkansas, Red Delicous, Granny Smith, Gravenstein, Macintosh, Sierra Beauty, Swaar, and Winter Banana. The fruit intensive processs requires an insane 45 pounds of apples/bottle produced. The apples are first pressed and then cold fermented. The distillation then takes place wiith more apples in the stlll and spirit sees a varied aging regimine. The final bottling contains brandy aged between 2-9 years in used American whiskey casks as well as used American and French oak wine casks. The bulk of the 2020 release is from the '14 and '15 vintages (6-7 years old at the time of bottling which actually happened in 2021 due to covid). The flavors are exceptional. Crisp apple followed by honeysuckle, strawberry, and creme brulee. Baking spices, honey, cornbread, chocolate and apple pie on the palate. California both grows some of the finest apples in the world and has a few of the best brandy producers in the world - a winning combination for an underappreciated spirits category.

Appreciably apple-y on the nose. Much more so than say most Calvados, this smells like perfectly ripe fresh cut apples first and foremost. There is also a stunning amount of complexity just under that upfront apple. Lots of baked apple notes mixed with pie spices and tangy cider. A little floral and honey drizzled on the palate. That sweet note gives way to a lot of baked spices and a little dash of cracked pepper. The mouthfeel is super interesting, it's zippy but silken. The finish leans towards the zippy side. Perhaps it's the wide array of apples, or maybe the huge range in age, but whatever it is, this is a way deeper and more complex pour than you might expect. St. George is one of the finest fruit distillers in America, and with another release of their Reserve Apple Brandy they've shown why one more time.
