2015 Burgess "Hillside Vineyards" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1543910 93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is absolutely delicious. Ripe, radiant and seductive, the 2015 is going to be nearly impossible to resist young. Even so, there is plenty of structural underpinning beneath all of the fruit. Sweet floral notes develop in the glass, adding lift, but above all else, the 2015 is a wine of textural voluptuousness, all in a silky, mid-weight style that is hugely appealing. K&L Notes

This estate traces its history back to the late 1870s when it was planted by Swiss/Italian immigrants. Eventually it became the Souverain estate where legends like Warren Winiarski (Stags Leap Wine Cellars) and Mike Grgich fine tuned their craft. Tom Burgess purchased the estate in 1972. The wines made from two estate vineyards, with soils composed primarily of volcanic ash with large granitic boulders. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in French oak barrels of which 15% is new.

Tom Burgess was quietly making stylish, mountain grown Cabs from the slopes of Howell Mountain for years. Long an unsung Napa hero, Tom Burgess was more concerned with making wine than selling it. As such, the wines frequently flew under the radar. But now there's a renewed interest and energy at the estate ever since it was purchased by the Lawrence family; the new owners of Heitz Cellars. The 2015 vintage is showing really well right now. There's plenty of bold fruit on the nose and palate that evokes the classic mountain grown cab. There's a glass full of mouth gripping tannins that add structure and complexity to what is a gorgeous bottle of wine. Match it with hearty fare such as a ribeye, porterhouse, or just pour yourself a tall glass and savor in your favorite armchair. This remains one of my favorite Cab finds of the year.
