2019 Domaine de la Ganse Vacqueyras

SKU #1543855

Coralie Onde is from the winemaking family behind Domaine les Ondines, but opted to start her own project independent of her family estate in 2008. She formed Domaine de la Ganse in Vacqueyras when she purchased some terrific old vine fruit, also taking a small holding when the family estate was split. With close to 9 hectares now, Coralie began the organic certification process and was officially certified in 2014. Her vines are aged from 15 to 55 years and the soils are primarily chalky-clay with some galet (river stones). Her Vacqueyras is a blend of C, hand-harvested, destemmed and fermented and aged in concrete tank. Her low intervention style preserves the fruit and character that define the region.

This is a delicious single village Rhone wine. It is a beautiful dark red color and has subtle aromas of earth and red fruits. In the mouth it is juicy dry and full bodied, with a wonderful balance and a crisp finish. This lovely wine will go well with hearty foods.

I was thrilled to get to taste this unusually well-priced Vacqueyras from organic producer Domaine de la Ganse, and I was not disappointed one bit. It showed a beautiful balance between fresh succulent plum/blueberry fruit, nice earthy minerality and the classic herbal profile typical of the wines of the area.

Another great Cru appellation, Vacqueyras doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. Winemaker Coralie Onde farms organically and makes a vibrant spicy and mineral driven Rhone wine that transcends. Currants, raspberries and cigar box aromas erupt from the glass. Top of the class!
