2019 Failla Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

SKU #1542430 92 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The appellation 2019 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is a great choice for readers looking to understand the more elegant, understated, yet balanced style of this estate. Revealing a ruby hue as well as attractive red and black fruits, salty minerality, and foresty, bouquet garni-like nuances, it's medium-bodied and has a round, supple texture as well as a great finish. As with all these 2019s from Failla, it has good underlying tannins yet a more rounded, soft, approachable style. Inner quote mark (7/2021)

Outer quote mark Spicy dried raspberry and cherry flavors show hints of dried beef in this firm red, with hints of savoriness midpalate, followed by mushroom broth hints on the finish. (KM) Inner quote mark (9/2021)

K&L Notes

Much like other single-site specialists like Siduri and Williams-Selyem, Ehren Jordan's Failla Wines is a full-spectrum study in the greatest cool-climate vineyards in California (with a recent branch out into Oregon's Willamette Valley, as well). But fans of the quintessential Sonoma Coast style should not overlook the AVA wines from Failla. Jordan uses several sites in these appellation-level blends to express the regional character, and in the lovely 2019 vintage these features come out in spades.

There are few wines out there that have such a high level of quality and consistency as the Failla Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. The 2019 is true to form. The aromatic intensity is absolutely off the charts. Reminiscent of Burgundy but with bright lift and drive. The palate is weighted, and concentrated, but has a slightly leaner edge than what you would find in Pinots from elsewhere, for instance Santa Lucia Highlands. This has plenty of fruit–but that’s not all this wine is about. There’s Rhubarb, and dried herbs, savory undertones and an earthy mid-palate, each element expressing itself, contributing to a sleek and seamless bottle that’s one of the best Pinot Noirs in its class, year after year.
