Boon Doon Winery changed ownership early last year, but its founder, the inimitable Randall Grahm has stayed on as head winemaker. Among the many changes that have ensued is that all of Bonny Doon’s wines have been reduced in price, and the new incarnation of Le Cigare Blanc is nothing less than an out-and-out steal. It is a juicy, mildly floral wine that keys on sweet peaches graced with a light touch of honey and, while rounded, and slightly viscous in feel, it is buoyed by freshness and enjoyable with or without food. - These heavily planted regions on either side of the vast Salinas Valley account for much of the mass-produced, commercial wine sold in supermarkets nationwide. In the hills, however, and in sub-AVAs like Chalone and Santa Lucia Highlands, quality is much higher. Pinot noir and chardonnay look to be particularly promising.
