2018 Domaine Emmanuel Darnaud "Lieu-Dit La Dardouille" St-Joseph (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1542233 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Every bit as good as I thought it was from barrel, the monumental 2018 Saint Joseph La Dardouille is one of the best Saint Josephs to have ever crossed this taster's lips—certainly in the Top 10. Hints of cedar accent deep notes of blackberry liqueur, underlain by a bed of crushed granite. Full-bodied, richly concentrated and textured, it's a prodigious effort that must be tasted to be believed. Despite the size and extract, there's a sense of cool restraint and even a bit of refreshment on the lengthy finish. (JC) Inner quote mark (5/2021)

Outer quote mark The Saint Joseph release from Darnaud, the 2018 Saint Joseph Lieu Dit La Dardouille comes from a well-known lieu-dit located in the southern part of the appellation. More cassis, violets, gunflint, and gamey notions emerge from this beauty. Medium to full-bodied, it has a classic Saint Joseph focused, mineral-laced style, fabulous purity, and a great finish. Outer quote mark Aromas of sun-drenched cassis, smoke and granite introduce this powerful, concentrated Syrah. Sourced from the La Dardouille lieu dit and matured 15 months in wood (no new oak), it’s a bold, boisterous expression of SaintJoseph. Juicy black-cherry and blackberry flavors are balanced keenly by zippy acidity and a fragrant violet finish. Soft, silky tannins make the wine appealing young but it should drink at peak through 2030 and hold further. (AI) Inner quote mark (8/2021)

Outer quote mark This is a powerful wine, dense, grippy, concentrated, but also vibrant in red berry fruits and juicy berry acidity. Fairly long with an oak regime that is strongly influential, so give it time, but this will be good when ready. 1.7ha parcel on the lieu-dit La Dardouille to the south of Tournon. 30 to 80-year-old vines, 20% whole bunch, 16 months in barriques or demi-muids. Outer quote mark Warm and lush, with crushed plum and boysenberry preserve flavors framed with cocoa and roasted tobacco notes. Cocoa edge lingers on the velvety finish. (JM) Inner quote mark (2/2021)
