2008 Henri Goutorbe "Special Club" Grand Cru Brut Champagne

SKU #1540999

Henri Goutorbe's "Special Club" bottling from the 2008 vintage is a truly remarkable Champagne. Apart from the fact that it hails from one of Champagne's most acclaimed modern vintages and is all Ay Grand Cru, its designation bears a particular clout. The "Special Club" wines are denoted as such by large committee of nearly every significant grower-producer in the region. After blind tasting the submissions from various domaines, the committee makes a determination as to whether each wine deserves to be counted in the "Special Club". The standards for inclusion alone mean this wine displays extraordinary and singular character. It is composed of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, and the first fermentation is done exclusively in stainless steel.

A powerhouse wine from a modern classic vintage, this is a wonderfully rich and brioche-filled bottle. The nose has notes of apples, caramel, yeasty bread, and melon. The palate is rich, round, and soft with notes of honey, apples, and white cherries finished by that rich, robust brioche. This is another wonderful Special Club that won't last long on our shelves!

This 2008 "Special Club" from Henri Goutorbe stands in stark contrast to its 2006 predecessor. It has an extremely complex nose of golden apples, lees, toasted nuts, and yeasty goodness. On the palate, significantly more linear than the 2006 with plush apples, peach pit, and roasted peanuts. This is a 2008 that you should NOT miss!

Patience is one of the Goutorbe family's many virtues, and this 2008 is just being released now, long after the Dom Perignon, Cristal, Bollinger, and so many others have sold out. This monumental, 100% Aÿ Grand Cru is a statement on the power that old vines on the steepest south-facing slopes of this village can produce, with not only decadent black cherry depth, but also the fabulous acidity of the legendary 2008 vintage. The color is white gold, and the aromatics remind me of savory pastry dough, but in the mouth the wine is like the Nuits-St-Georges of Champagne with more concentration than I had ever imagined. The back end comes together with excellent lift, lengthening those savory flavors. Great now with salmon, this wine could also be kept for decades in a good cellar.
Drink from 2021 to 2048
