2019 Clos de la Bonnette "Légende Bonnetta" Condrieu

SKU #1540299 95 points Decanter

Outer quote mark There's freshness, depth and a richness of aroma here that many Condrieu lack in 2019. Very full-bodied and rich, but with enough acidity and freshness to balance it. Great intensity, and the salinity that's required in a hot vintage to help the wine stand up. Long finish. One of the best Condrieus of the vintage. Organic. Lieu-dit Côte Bonnette, dark migmatite granite at the north of the appellation. Twenty-year-old vines on steep slopes. 11 months in barriques, malo completed. Most of the blend is unfiltered, all unfined. 1,950 bottles made. (MW) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

K&L Notes

Condrieu is a particularly small region in the Northern Rhone that solely produces Viognier--but not just any Viognier. Simply put, these are the best in the world, and Condrieu is the benchmark by which all other Viognier is measured. Domaine Clos de la Bonnette was purchased in 1992 by wife and husband team, Isabelle Guiller and Henri Montabonnet. Henri and Isabelle restored this dormant property, restacking the walls by hand and replanting the vineyards. With no close neighbors, a natural barrier exists which allows them to more easily produce organically, a process by which they have farmed since they began replanting. The quality of the fruit is so high that Marcel Guigal wanted to purchase their grapes and put them under contract. Thankfully, they politely declined. The "Legende" is 100% Viognier made from the oldest vines on the estate and farmed on the granitic slopes that makes Condrieu so special. Aged for a short time in barrel which add to the potpourri of aromatics that will engage and delight you.

Though Shangri-La may be fictional, Clos de la Bonnette approaches the idyllic and almost mythical view of beauty that I imagine when I think of such places. As you drive up to the cottage on the property, if you overshot by a hair, your car would careen down one of the most immaculately reconstructed slopes in Condrieu. This labor of love has gorgeous soils, a stunning vista, and an otherworldliness as you stand above the vineyards as they unfold below you. It requires the skill of a mountain goat to move up and down the slope's terraces, while the vine's beauty and the ancient structures on the property evoke memories of centuries (if not millennia) past. It is a striking place, and it makes striking wines. Under Isabel Guiller's watchful eye (and her son Antoine's) the viticulture has always been and continues to be organic. Acquiring the property in 1992, their family has rebuilt the ancient slopes all by hand, a near mythical endeavour that a Greek hero would be envious of. The Légende is from the property's oldest vines, some 20-plus years of age. Still youthful, but this was a reconstruction, and each year I have visited and tasted, the vines and their granitic terroir speak more loudly. The 2019 is a new benchmark. A gorgeous perfume of night jasmine, pear, peach nectar, and salty minerality give composure and sustenance to the palate. It is an exceptional Condrieu, and its transportive properties are not just imaginary. Maybe Shangri-La is not all fantasy. You can visit it by sipping a glass of this.
