2020 Cave de Tavel "Cuvée Royale" Tavel Rosé

SKU #1540295 90 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Shockingly plum-colored in the glass, this berry-scented, dry rosé balances forward, fruity notes of red cherry and blackberry against firm strikes of graphite and cut-stone minerality. Full bodied and refreshingly composed, it’s an apt companion to both summer barbecues and delicate fowl dishes in the fall or winter. (AI) Inner quote mark (8/2021)

90 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This is ripe and juicy, but also refined, with a red tea note framing the core of gently mulled strawberry and raspberry fruit, while a subtle mineral edge adds length and cut on the sneaky long finish. Grenache, Cinsault, Clairette, Syrah and Picpoul. Drink now. 5,000 cases made, 850 cases imported. (JM) Inner quote mark (7/2021)

K&L Notes

What do you get from a region that only produces rosé? Why, some of the best rosés in the world of course. The Tavel appellation is world-renowned for making deep, expressive pink wines, the likes of which are not seen outside of this special (and highly specialized) region. The Cave de Tavel cooperative produces half of the AOC's production volume, and their coterie of small growers take meticulous care of their small plots to ensure the best quality wines are produced from their fruit.

Tavel is the oldest and only exclusively rosé-producing region in France. And it’s almost rosé-in-name-only when you see the depth of color here! This has a rich mouthfeel brimming with cherry, strawberry, and red plum flavors; and a savory side as well, with notes of crushed herbs and a minerality that separates it from the pack. This is a rosé that will carry you from summer through fall and beyond—if you can wait that long. Served chilled, but not too chilled, this has flavor for days!
