2019 Château de la Tour Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1539888 92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, raw cocoa, loamy soil and incense. Medium to full-bodied, deep and elegantly muscular, it has lively acids, powdery tannins and a classically balanced, youthfully reserved profile. It's a touch finer-boned and more vibrant than its 2018 counterpart at the same stage. This was a fascinating tasting with father François Labet and son Edouard, who are together pushing Domaine Pierre Labet and the Château de la Tour to new qualitative heights. Organic and now biodynamic farming in the vineyards, vinification with—in red—appreciable percentages of whole clusters in the winery and long élevage in the cellars are the order of the day. Perfumed, seamless and concentrated, the 2019s are immensely promising, and in a richer, more overtly muscular register, the 2018s (which I took the opportunity during my visit to re-taste in bottle) have turned out very well, too. I'll be hoping to spend more time at this address later in 2021 and plan to report back in more detail. (WK) 92-94+ Inner quote mark (1/2021)

Outer quote mark The Cuvée Classique is produced from the younger vines of the domaine. The result in 2019 was delicious, with a pronounced blackberry and plum fruit that has a distinctly brambly edge, plus a note of menthol, as well as a bit of spice from the Chassin casks. The texture is concentrated and scarcely less powerful than the Vieilles Vignes. Wonderful value in grand cru Burgundy. (CC) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru "Cuvée Classique" has a fragrant nose with red berry fruit, still that touch of struck flint, fine focus with just a touch of reduction at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip on the entry, quite chalky tannins, white pepper towards the prolonged finish. Just as I expected having tasted this in barrel last year, this Cuvée Classique is ageing with style. (NM) Inner quote mark (12/2021)

91-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark A ripe and agreeably fresh nose is quite floral with its layered aromas of various red berries, warm earth, spice and a hint of exotic tea, all surrounded by subtle but perceptible wood. The denser, powerful and muscular flavors possess excellent intensity before culminating in a dusty, sappy and youthfully austere finish. The supporting tannins are dense but reasonably fine and this should easily reward 15+ years of cellaring though be approachable after 7 to 10 years. Inner quote mark (1/2021)

K&L Notes

92-96pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Dense purple black. The nose has gone missing for the moment, perhaps a bit hidden by the wood. This shows again at the back of the palate. But it will not be bottled for 6 or 7 months yet and will doubtless fall into place. The quality of the wine is very good. Gracious, mouth-filling, dark fruit with some alpine raspberry notes. Tasted: November 2020." (10/2020)
