2018 Domaine les Pallieres "Les Racines" Gigondas

SKU #1538232 95-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The precise blend for this cuvée hadn't been finalized at the time of my visit, so the sample I tasted of 2018 Gigondas Les Racines was an approximation put together by the team at the estate. Marked by accents of blood orange and citrus zest, the raspberry fruit at the core of this wine is concentrated and ripe. Full-bodied and rich, yet silky, fine and elegant, it's a classic representation of this microclimate and its 75-year-old Grenache vines. Owned by the Brunier family (or Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe and American importer Kermit Lynch), Domaine Les Pallières bottles two cuvées of Gigondas each year. Terrasse du Diable comes from the higher-altitude, cooler parcels, while Les Racines originates from the plateau around the winery itself and includes the property's oldest vines. Of the two, the Diable is usually the more powerful wine, yet it never seems to lack elegance. There's also an interesting barrel-fermented rosé, produced as a Vin de France. Outer quote mark Slightly deeper and richer, with a more backward style, the 2018 Gigondas Les Racines reveals a deeper ruby/plum color as well as terrific notes of ripe black cherries, roasted garrigue, scorched earth, and ground pepper. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and concentrated, with plenty of underlying structure, it’s a terrific 2018 that’s going to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and drink brilliantly over the following decade or more. Outer quote mark From very old vines (70-100 years old). There is a strong, red-fruit focus here with a sappy and very plush feel to the palate. Succulent, fleshy and mellow and a very suave, open-knit and ripe-grenache finish. A blend of 85% grenache and 15% cinsault and syrah co-planted. Drink over the first decade. K&L Notes

John Livingstone-Learmonth: "(large barrel, bottling June/July 2020) shiny dark red; this has a stylish bouquet, neatly together, gives a serene offer of red fruits, slinky appeal, with a note of iron. The palate is silken from the old vines, a natural flow with precision, detail. It finishes on lovely tannins that are like a glove. This is one of the best Racines ever. A thread of mineral, blood, runs through it. The finish brings in light grain crunch, with a note of rose – a rare combination that works very well. There’s great style in its juice. From 2022. 2044-46 Oct 2019."

Wild flowers, Raspberry and potpourri lead to an intense body of plum and dark berry fruit. Expect this tensile and energetic wine to blossom with decanting or cellar time. Delicious and exquisitely crafted.
