90 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Glistening ruby-red. Aromas of fresh red berries, cherry and vanilla reveal subtle spice and herb nuances. Juicy and supple on the palate, offering lively red currant and bitter cherry flavors that turn sweeter on the back half. In an appealingly approachable style, delivering very good finishing energy, smooth tannins and lingering red fruit notes.(JR) Inner quote mark (4/2021)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The red 2017 Cune Crianza is a wine they have always produced (though it used to be sold as Tercer Año [third year], as it was sold the third year after the harvest). It has the classical blend of Tempranillo with around 15% Garnacha and Mazuelo from the Rioja Alta zone and was fermented in 20,000-liter stainless steel tanks at 25–27 degrees Celsius to keep the fruit character in the wine. It matured in used American oak barrels for one year. They produce three million bottles of this throughout the year. It's classical but has some juicy sapidity, clean with very fine tannins and defined flavors. A triumph over the conditions of the vintage. Production was lower than the previous vintage because of the frost, but that also meant all grapes for this wine were handpicked, as nobody harvested with machines. (LG) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

K&L Notes

Companiá Vinícola del Norte de España, CVNE, or Cune is one of the oldest Rioja bodegas. While they boast some of the best of historic, older 20th century vintages, in modern times they continue to produce very solid, traditionally oriented Riojas in two main product ranges: Imperial, which represents only Reservas and Gran Reservas in limited quantities, and their basic Cune line, into which this Crianza falls. Similar to many other successful wine brands, Cune's basic range of wines is made in robust quantities, which makes the consistent quality and value all the more impressive. At $12, this is a terrific value not only in Rioja, but in any imported red.
