2018 Bodegas Caro "Amancaya" Bordeaux Blend Mendoza

SKU #1536969 94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This shows blackberry, tobacco, coffee and iodine aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Polished, yet happily dense with creamy tannins and a long, savory finish. So drinkable now, but will improve with age. Inner quote mark (2/2020)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2018 Amancaya, a blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, aims to combine the fruit and freshness of Malbec with the power and complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon. It was partly matured in oak barrels and keeps a fruit-driven and ripe profile with a soft palate with very fine tannins. (LG) Inner quote mark (3/2021)

K&L Notes

Bodegas Caro is a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family. It started with the idea of crafting a wine with the signature varietals from each partner, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, respectively. The Catenas with their knowledge of the high altitude vineyards and the Rothschild experience in winemaking and aging the project was an immediate success. The Bodegas Caro wines are an expression of Mendoza fruit with Bordeaux style. After a couple of years they decided to create a second wine in the BOrdeaux fashion and Amancaya was born. Amancaya is the native name for a wild flower that is found near the vineyards.

A blend of 70% Malbec and 30% Cab, this little number presents remarkably Malbec-forward on the nose with a hint of that cassis. I get notes of plum, cassis liqueur, concord grape, tomato, and sage. The palate darkens up quite nicely. It's toasty and somewhat more brooding than the nose led on. Leading the charge here is a combination of red fruit, violet, and toasted oak. The middle palate widens out quite a bit with notes of dried herbs and tomato paste. The finish is long and tinged with toasted orange peel and a tannic grip that lends weight to the wine. This bottle makes me believe that it wants to be taken more seriously than the price point suggests, and it's definitely succeeding at that!

This wine over delivers. That should be the case considering the historic families involved. This is not your typical Malbec blend. While it is only 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, it definitely drives the character of the wine. It is a dark and composed medium- to full-bodied wine. The fruit is ripe, but it does not dominate. The wine is more structured than you would assume, yet the soft tannins of the Malbec glide across the palate making this wine effortless. The aromas and the flavors start dark and intriguing then open and brighten and deepen with subtle spice and tobacco. You shouldn't be surprised, but you will be. Quick note, this wine needs some time to open, so give it at least 30 minutes.
