2018 Domaine de l'Enchantoir "Le Pied à L'Étrier" Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame Rouge

SKU #1536960 91 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark South of the Loire-side city of Saumur, this estate has produced a ripe, spicy wine with a light texture over smoky flavors and generous red fruits. The wine still vibrates with young fruit, so let it settle and drink from 2022. (RV) Inner quote mark (6/2021)

Outer quote mark The 2018 Saumur Champigny Domaine de L'Enchantoir Le Pied à l'Étrier is a savory, smoky expression of Cabernet Franc with a supple mouthfeel, followed up by a veil of powdery tannins that coat the whole mouth. Its ripe, baked red fruits and generous nature reveal the warmth of the season, while its elegance and flowing acidity remind us that we're still in the north of France. There's no oak here; maturation took place in concrete vats, allowing the fruit to shine, as it ought. Long, spiced finish. (RG) Inner quote mark (10/2021)

Outer quote mark The Brunet family farms their vines organically in this very chalky section of Saumur, with the vines over forty years of age. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in cement vats prior to bottling, with the 2018 coming in listed at 14.2 percent octane in this warm summer. The wine is deep and ripe on the nose, wafting from the glass in a mix of dark berries, cassis, coffee grounds, bonfire, hung game and a good touch of soil tones. On the palate the wine is broad-shouldered, full-bodied and quite powerfully-built for Saumur, with a rock solid core of fruit, good limestone undertow, firm, chewy tannins and a long, primary and well-balanced finish. This is a big boy that needs some bottle age to soften up its backend tannins, but should prove to be a good drink in a riper style, once it has had a chance to blossom. Inner quote mark (6/2021)

K&L Notes

Domaine de l'Enchantoir is run by the Brunet family in the new sub-appellation of Saumur-Puy-Notre-Dame. Distinguished from the rest of Saumur, Puy-Notre-Dame plantings sit between 50-150 meters, relatively high by Loire standards. The winery has been certified organic since 2010. "Le Pied" is 100% Cabernet Franc planted on the hard limestone known as tuffeaux with very little top soil. The wine is fermented using native yeasts in tank with no additions and a minimal amount of SO2 at bottling. This is classic and honest Cabernet Franc perfect for pairing with roasted duck, charcuterie or smoked trout.

Earthy and lively! This is a beautiful blue fruited expressional wine. Blueberries, black currents, ripe black mission figs and dried plums along with its wild gamey aromatics binds this wines character. Enjoy with roasted rosemary lamb shoulder, shiitake mushrooms and polenta.

This powerhouse is dark and meaty with brambly mixed berries and black cherries embedded in the deep mid-palate. The hearty wine is richly textured and flavored, very earthy and has a mouth watering and chewy quality that will have you thinking of very hearty fare.

Sitting a little higher in elevation may not seem like much in Saumur but that distinction seems to lend a little more tension and perfume to the wines of Puy-Notre-Dame. And so much the better! I am a fiend for Cabernet Franc, especially when it's this lovely. Gone are the days of overtly hard and herbaceous styles (though with some age, I have seen many of them become so lofty and intriguing). The best parts remain, red and black currant fruit, porcini mushroom, rosemary and fresh-tilled earth. The Enchantoir pulls in all those savory notes that makes for beautifully neo-classic Cabernet Franc. With it's seamless structure that invites you back for more, this elegant and perfumed wine will find a happy home on all tables filled with fall flavors from butternut squash soup, to herb roasted fowl (I'm looking at you turkey!), to braised pork dishes. This has the fruit and structure to pair beautifully with so many things.
