2017 Avennia "Sestina" Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $50)

SKU #1536902 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated release from Peterson, the 2017 Sestina comes from the Red Willow, Bacchus, and Dionysus vineyards. Rocking levels of crème de cassis, sappy herbs, violets, and cedar pencil all flow to a full-bodied, incredibly pure, polished 2017 that offers flawless balance, ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It's more approachable than normal yet is still going to evolve for 15 to 20 years. The blend is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, all raised 20 months in 50% new French oak. Inner quote mark (4/2020)

Outer quote mark With a focused and delineated nose, the 2017 Sestina is bold and complex with aromas of blackberry preserves, spiced plums, dark cherry skins and elegant tones of vanilla, baking spices, baked earth, dried herbs and bitter dark chocolate. Full-bodied, the wine is generous and expressive, showing layers that evolve with intensity, expressing flavors of chocolate dark, fruit compote and elegant oak spices before displaying an inky mid-palate. The wine has a long, drawn-out finish that continues to evolve, revealing many of its secrets with vanilla and cinnamon over graphite with juicy plums and blackberry essence. Wow! Outer quote mark The 2017 is aromatic with scents of dried mint, plum and black cherry, and the fruit glimmers, cradled in generous oak notes. It feels composed, with Red Willow’s signature firm, grainy tannins, the wine ready for strip steak. Inner quote mark (12/2020)

93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Bright, dark red with ruby tones. Musky aromas of redcurrant, spices, olive and flowers, plus a hint of graphite minerality that Chris Peterson says comes from the Bacchus Vineyard. Wonderfully silky, thick and round without being heavy, offering complex flavors of redcurrant, minerals, spices, saddle leather and shoe polish lifted by notes of wild herbs and flowers. There's also a peppery nuance here that does not come across as green. Perhaps a bit more open-knit than the 2016 version was a year ago, but this beauty still has more to show. My colleague Ryan has long been singing the praises of Washington State wine and Avennia specifically. It is a fact that Washington State has been producing world class wine as good as or even finer than many other prominent wine growing regions across the globe. We've enjoyed a great run with the Avennia wines and here's another convincing argument why you need to try these wines. Few expenses are spared here as they create some stunning Bordeaux style reds. This release of the "Sestina" demonstrates top vineyard sourcing and meticuous winemaking. The aromatics offer up the telltale Bordeaux meets New World sensibility that is a hallmark here. Dark, brooding black fruit aromas are framed perfectly with a dash of wood spice. The wine is firm and concentrated on the palate but the tannins are perfectly sauve making this one to be enjoyed today through the next 10 years, provided you can wait that long. The finish is long and complex and quite rewarding. The wine leaves you with a great taste in your mouth...and, thanks to a very attractive negotiated "Insider Advantage" price, your wallet will thank you! Bravo Ryan on digging up another tremendous gem.

Another exquisite release of Sestina, and again we're able to offer our winery direct, market low pricing - $49.95 (Elsewhere $70+) This wine is blended from the best of the best old vine Cabernet from the top vineyards in Washington, plus a dash of Merlot and Cab Franc to round it out. If you've experienced this wine before you know what to expect; lashings of bold, dark fruit, huckleberry, cassis, blackberry with plenty of gravelly, stony minerals, crushed rock, graphite, cedar wood. It like classic left bank Bordeaux with just a touch more ripeness and saturation to the fruit. It will age well too, if you can resist its considerable youthful charms, maybe drink some now and try and lose a couple in the back of the cellar.
Drink from 2021 to 2041
