K&L Notes

Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia founder Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, ended up in Patagonia after tasting a bottle of Pinot Noir he fell in love with, and was told came from old vines in Patagonia. This wine comes from 60-year-old, head pruned vines in the Rio Negro Valley of Patagonia. As the name suggests (albeit in Spanish), there is no added sulphur in this wine - a rare thing that is enabled by the extremely high quality of the grapes and the attention to detail in the winemaking at this address. *Natural Wine*

Two of the wines that I most look forward to tasting every year are the Chacra Sin Azufre and the Cincuenta Cinco. If you have gotten to this point you already know what the differences are between the wines. This is one of my favorite “Natural” wines year in and year out. There is a dark, earthy, spicy character to this wine that is impossible to quite put your finger on. The Pinot fruit is beautiful, ripe and pure with an ever so slight tart edge to it. The wine has really good energy to it without being nervous, I know that is a weird thing to say but a lot of minimal intervention wines have a jangly, puckery, acidity, which can be a lot of fun but it can wear on you. This wine is such a good hang. It is Pinot. It is Patagonia. It is Chacra. A great wine for all drinkers, regardless of your feelings about SO2.
