Paul John "Mithuna" Limited Edition Single Malt Indian Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1535960

Winner of a coveted spot in Jim Murray's Top 3 Best Whiskies in 2021. The 2nd expression in Paul John's Zodiac Series, the Mithuna bottling is the much anticipated follow up to Kanya. Mithuna is the Indian counterpart to the Gemini. Bottled at a whopping 58% ABV, this is a taste of Goa unlike anything else Paul John has released. The whisky has been aged in virgin American oak casks and finished in used Bourbon barrels. Unpeated and non-chill-filtered. Here's Paul John's write up: "Hues of old oak and sophisticated aromas of liquorice with gentle beeswax lead to a luxuriant delivery of ulmo honey on crisp toast, and tender notes of vanilla. Chewy flavours of coffee mocha, orange peel and delicate spice float on active tannins while gentle oils enjoy gists of dark cocoa tones. The finish is gratifyingly long and complex with multi-toned sugars and delicate honeys. Renowned for contradictive strengths, the characteristics of Gemini are epitomized by this Indian single malt as mesmerizing layers of austere, dry tannins are challenged in equal measure by resplendent sugars and mocha on delicate oils.

I can't say I know much about astrology or purported traits of Geminis, but whisky - that I can do. Big and punchy American oak right off the bat, both on the nose and palate. Mithuna isn't messing around at 58% ABV - it's a big and intense personality. As you get to know it a little bit more, it softens up. Sweeter caramel candy, vanilla fudge and milk chocolate come through with a bit of stone fruit and the very complex notes of sandalwood and wild California mugwort. Towards the back of the palate and into the finish it again turns to the life of the party with big and bold spicy notes of cinnamon and oak mixed with candied oranges and burnt citrus peel. While it doesn't come cheap - it is one of the finest offerings from Paul John yet and an exceptional example of what they are accomplishing in the production of single malt in Goa.
