K&L Notes

Hawk and Horse is a small, biodynamically farmed estate that sits at 2,220 feet elevation in Lake County's Red Hills AVA. The property is lovingly farmed by the Hawkins family, who have become very well-known and respected in the organic/biodynamic farming community. Winemaker Dr. Richard Peterson was the original winemaker at Screaming Eagle before passing the torch to his daughter, Heidi Barrett. Peterson has had a long and illustrious career making wine in Napa, including being mentored by the great André Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu Vineyards, who chose Peterson to succeed him as Head Winemaker when he retired. *Biodynamic*

A more than worthy follow up to the sold out 2013 Hawk and Horse Cabernet. After the huge success and raving reviews of the last vintage, we went back to the winery to see if we could secure any more wine. They offered us the same screaming deal on the 2014 Cabernet, but this time you don't just have to take our word for it on the quality, the 2014 has a glowing 93 point write up from Wine Enthusiast to boot. It shares that same power and structure as it's predecessor, big, deep red and black fruit, graphite, crushed rock and tobacco notes. Dense, powerful, mountain grown Cab with an old-school sensibility that favors varietal character and longevity over sweet, jammy fruit. This is very serious Cabernet that drinks well beyond our bargain price point. Ready to drink now after its 7 years of ageing, or stash some away in the cellar for another 10 years of prime enjoyment. A lot of folks were disappointed when we sold out of the 2013 in a matter of days. This wine is every bit as good and likely to sell fast too.

Hawk and Horse is back for a brand new vintage, and it's a stunner. After an hour of air, the aromas have me returning to the glass again and again. Plentiful deep red fruits pair with hints of tobacco and cedar. On the palate it shows a bit more focus, with plum, cassis, graphite, leather, fine tannins, and a streak of acidity that carries the finish. There's something about this that has me thinking of Pessac, perhaps a vintage that's senior to this 2014, but aging just as gracefully. It is at a stage where it is showing signs of entering an early plateau of maturity, but one that will last for another 5-10 years. For anybody looking for a ready-to-drink Cabernet to follow over the coming years, there are few deals that match what you'll find right now with Hawk and Horse 2014.
