Cahors, the ancestral home of Malbec, has experienced a renaissance in recent years. In its heyday, the wines of Cahors held more prestige than those of its neighbors in Bordeaux, but when phylloxera struck in the late 19th century, it took decades for the region to make a comeback. Long overlooked, the region has quietly modernized and advanced, and one of the best wineries to emerge in this new wave is Château Haut-Monplaisir. Cathy and Daniel Fournié (and now daughter Mathilde) of Château Haut-Monplaisir farm 75 acres organically in the Lot Valley on what is known as the third terrace of the valley floor, the highest and the best by virtue of its well-drained soils. All of Haut-Monplaisir's wines are composed of 100% Malbec, staying true to the distinctive nature of the grape variety. The "Tradition" is brought up in concrete tanks and 30% neutral barrel preserving its varietal character. This a beautifully ripe and rich Malbec that reflects the "traditions" of the region. So filled with generous fruit, this Cahors is a benchmark example of classic French Malbec. It has a juicy core of raspberry fruit surrounded by sweet tannins. A great crossover for fans of Argentine Malbec and also anyone who just loves a delicious full-bodied red at a reasonable price.

I tasted the "Tradition" from Haut-Monplaisir in a lineup of about 15 other wines from various categories, and this is the one that stopped me in my tracks. I kept coming back to it because it is so. darn. impressive. It's an outstanding example of French Malbec: inky and floral with spicy black fruit undertones; elegant on its feet yet serious with brooding aromatics. There's great texture without being heavy at all. Organically grown by a small family domaine and clocking in at under $20? This is going to be on heavy rotation for me.

Malbec

- These days if you're drinking a Malbec it's probably from Argentina. The most planted grape in that country, varietally-labeled Argentine Malbecs are one of the wine market's great values, prized for their slight herbal component and dark, luscious fruit. Structurally, Argentina's Malbecs are much different than those grown in the grape's native France; they are riper, fruitier and fleshier. In France, the best iterations of Malbec can be found in the Cahors, where it can be quite decadent. It is also planted in the Loire Valley, where it is called Côt and is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon or Gamay, and in Bordeaux, where it has fallen from favor in many of the region's great blends because it is difficult to grow. In the United States, the varietal is frequently added to Meritage wines - Bordeaux style blends - but it is rarely found on its own.
