Unlike a couple of the firm's lieu-dit samples from Saint Joseph, Ferraton's 2018 Saint Joseph la Source (a blended cuvée) shows admirable freshness and vibrance. Violets and purple raspberries adorn the nose, while the full-bodied palate shows off silky tannins, a sense of stony reserve and a long, licorice-tinged finish. (JC)

Vinous
Saturated ruby. A complex bouquet evokes spice-accented dark berries and cherry liqueur, along with suggestions of succulent flowers and black pepper. Lively and focused in the mouth, offering sweet black raspberry, cherry cola, allspice and floral pastille flavors that are underscored by a core of smoky minerality. Smooth tannins sneak up slowly on the long, focused finish, which shows sharp clarity and leaves behind juicy red fruit and spice notes. 85% concrete and 15% oak for aging. (JR)

The entry-level Saint Joseph, the 2018 Saint Joseph La Source is in a mix of tank and barrels. This classy, complex effort offers lots of spring flowers, new leather, and black raspberry notes as well as medium-bodied richness, good acidity, and light, yet present tannins. It's a pretty, balanced, well-made wine to enjoy over the coming 5-7 years.

K&L Notes
The history of Ferraton begins in 1946 when it was founded by Jean Orëns Ferraton. Acquiring vineyards in Hermitage, St-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. Son, Michel Ferraton joined his father years later and helped expand the estate's holdings. It was not until 1998 when the Godfather of the Northern Rhone, Michel Chapoutier, was welcomed as an investor in the winery and brought along his interests in organic and biodynamic farming. In 2008, oenologist Damien Bresset was added to the team and with his restrained hand, the wine began to truly express the best of the terroirs and their current profiles. Specializing in single site and appellation focused wines, Ferraton has one of the most exciting portfolios in the Northern (and a few surprise Southern) Rhône wines. The "La Source" St-Joseph is part of the Traditional line made up of primarily contract fruit, grown to Ferraton's specifications. It is 100% Syrah fermented and aged in a mix of concrete tank and used large oak barrels. This Syrah has an inviting quality that gives you that smoky bacon quality that speaks loudly of classic St-Joseph. A tough Syrah to beat at this price.
