2018 Domaine des Tourelles "Vieilles Vignes" Cinsault Bekaa Valley Lebanon

SKU #1530307

Wine production in Lebanon dates back to the times of antiquity when the Greeks and Romans found inspiration for winemaking in this region. The mountains surrounding the Bekaa Valley is some of the most highly regarded terroir with its limestone soil base and its extraordinary altitude. It remains one of the highest altitude production zones in the world. Domaine des Tourelles was founded in 1868 and has produced wine continuously through a mutlitude of geo-political changes and wars, including a civil war. But the modern era of Lebanese winemaking is definitely French influenced and look no further than winemaker Faouzi Issa who studied winemaking abroad and staged at wineries, Rene Rostaing in Cote Rotie and Chateau Margaux in Bordeaux. His passion for the grapes of those regions finds its own Lebanese spin where blending of those grapes is commonplace and helps define the region's character. The Cinsault comes from vines 50+ years of age grown over clay-limestone soils. The wine is hand harvested and fermented using indigenous yeasts in concrete vats. The wine ages for 8 months in neutral oak barrels. The Cinsault has candied red and black fruit notes with its flavors of strawberries and plum confiture. It is lush and almost decadent but with a medium body finish and finesse. A truly special wine from this very special producer. (Practicing Organic)

Cinsault is one of those underdog varieties that are incredibly tasty and charismatic, but typically eschewed by most wine drinkers who are unfamiliar. It manages to hold good acidity in some of the warmest grape growing regions, and it seems like every year we’re seeing more and more of them hit our shelves. The Domaine des Tourelles, starts with a reductive and savory undertone beneath sweet black cherries over-ripe strawberries. The palate is what really hits this wine home. With rich, mouth coating texture that hits every angle of the palate, but isn’t weight down with weightiness it stays light and agile on the palate. This is could easily handle a slight chill and is a great red options for lighter to medium foods.
