2019 Domaine Ferret Pouilly-Fuissé "Cuvée Hors Classes Tournant de Pouilly"

Outer quote mark Notes of citrus zest, white flowers, crisp stone fruit, vanilla pod and almond paste introduce the 2019 Pouilly-Fuissé Hors-Classe Tournant de Pouilly, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered wine that's deep and concentrated, with a seamless profile and racy girdling acids. Concluding with a long, mineral finish, it has turned out especially well. Louis Jadot acquired the Domaine J. A. Ferret, one of the historic reference points for the wines of Pouilly-Fuissé, in 2008. Madame Jeanne Ferret was one of Burgundy's great matriarchs, producing rich, concentrated wines that were harvested late and matured on the lees in oak barrels. Many of the wines produced under her tenure—and that of her daughter—are still drinking well today. Today, the style has changed; but the wines of Domaine Ferret are equally worthy of attention. Winemaker Audrey Braccini is producing fresher, brighter, earlier-harvested interpretations of Pouilly-Fuissé, and they're beautifully balanced, intense and engaging, clearly differentiated by site. The presence of new oak remains decidedly minimal at this address, though the wines see longer élevage on the lees. Braccini excels in warm vintages—witness her compelling 2015s—and so she has in 2019. Concentrated but incisive, everything reviewed here comes recommended, and as is so often the case, I found myself reflecting that this estate is one of the finest and most consistent addresses in the Mâconnais. Outer quote mark Once again there is just enough wood to merit pointing out surrounding the lightly reduced and cool but ripe aromas of lemon rind, passion fruit and apple compote. The sleek middle weight flavors are not as dense or powerful as those of the Ménétrières or Prouges, but they are noticeably finer and with more evident minerality on the dry, clean and lingering and super-citrusy finish. This is lovely and a bit more delicate than usual. *Burghound Outstanding!* Inner quote mark (10/2021)

Outer quote mark The 2019 Tournant de Pouilly is from 60-year-old vines planted on north-east facing slopes. The wine shows a lilting lemony fruit on the initial attack, then notes of mineral and spice with time. On the palate the texture is rich and dense, but there is a firm line of acidity to keep everything in balance. The grapes are lightly crushed and fermented in casks (20% new), before ageing 10 months and then a further six in tank. (CC) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

K&L Notes

92-95 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "The plan is to maintain the name in the future, with the back label specifying 1er Cru Les Reisses, which will become the official name for this vineyard. A cooler spot exposed east to north east and pure limestone, so it can be more austere. Today the 2019 shows electric white fruit with some ripe citrus notes, then fresh apple, a few pears too. This is really singing, a beautifully complex wine. Tasted: September 2020."
