2019 Domaine Ferret Pouilly-Fuissé "Tête de Cru Clos des Prouges"

SKU #1530082 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2019 Pouilly-Fuissé Tête de Cru Clos des Prouges is lovely, mingling aromas of citrus oil, pear, fresh bread, green apple and nutmeg in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and elegantly muscular, its enveloping attack segues into a bright, precise finish. Louis Jadot acquired the Domaine J. A. Ferret, one of the historic reference points for the wines of Pouilly-Fuissé, in 2008. Madame Jeanne Ferret was one of Burgundy's great matriarchs, producing rich, concentrated wines that were harvested late and matured on the lees in oak barrels. Many of the wines produced under her tenure—and that of her daughter—are still drinking well today. Today, the style has changed; but the wines of Domaine Ferret are equally worthy of attention. Winemaker Audrey Braccini is producing fresher, brighter, earlier-harvested interpretations of Pouilly-Fuissé, and they're beautifully balanced, intense and engaging, clearly differentiated by site. The presence of new oak remains decidedly minimal at this address, though the wines see longer élevage on the lees. Braccini excels in warm vintages—witness her compelling 2015s—and so she has in 2019. Concentrated but incisive, everything reviewed here comes recommended, and as is so often the case, I found myself reflecting that this estate is one of the finest and most consistent addresses in the Mâconnais. Outer quote mark An attractively fresh and bright nose is comprised by a variety of white fleshed fruit, orange peel and a more discreet floral hint that is also trimmed in noticeable wood. The lush and overtly opulent medium-bodied plus flavors are shaped by citrus-tinged acidity on the clean and dry finale that is markedly more complex. As is usually the case with this wine, it's big and powerful though not especially refined PF. *Burhound Outstanding!* Inner quote mark (10/2021)

Outer quote mark Located in the center of the village of Pouilly, this 5-acre clos rises on an east-facing slope where most of the vines date to 1956. Fermented and aged in barrels (20 percent new), this spends 10 months in oak, then 8 months in stainless steel on its fine lees. That aging brings out the caramelized richness in the wine, the smoke and toasted oak tightened around limestone acidity, needing air to reveal its lemon-blossom scents. Built to cellar. K&L Notes

90-93 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Grown on marl with a coat of clay above, which gives volume. Firm full white fruit, excellent balance on the attack, more weight and intensity behind, a fresh feel to the finish, waves of flavour, ripe grapefruit, powerful, but impressive. Tasted: September 2020."
