K&L Notes

Yves Cuilleron is one of the greats of Condrieu. He is based in the village of Chavanay, just south of Condrieu with familial roots going back a century. His grandfather was the first to bottle wine for commercial purposes in his village. Yves assumed control of the estate from his uncle Antoine in 1987. He increased the exposure of Condrieu but also gained holdings in nearby Cote-Rotie and even acquired vineyards in St-Peray, far to the south. The "Cavanos" bottling was introduced in 2015 using his oldest vines from his Syrah vines from his nearby holdings. The wine is aged for 18 months in barrique, mostly used. A forward and rich style, this is an exceptional drinking vintage! Grilled lamb anyone?

This opens with black raspberry and baked blackberry fruit as well as wet slate aromas. The wine is sleek and clean with lots of dark fruit, mineral and pepper strutting through the mid-palate. Young, intense and delicious.

A beautiful Syrah that will go very good with food. Round dark fruit flavors dominate this flavorful dry and balanced wine.

Best known for his Condrieu, Yves Cuilleron is also a master of St-Joseph Syrahs. The Cavanos is old vine fruit from his vineyards near Chavanay, his home village. The Cavanos is richly complex and luscious Syrah with candied cherries, blackberries, crushed sage and peppery spice. A light gamy note hearkens to the bacon-y character that will emerge more as the wine evolves - if you can wait that long! This is compelling Syrah and with its silky mouthfeel makes it very approachable now but has a long life ahead of it. I had mine with pan seared picanha steak and some smashed potatoes. What are you having?
