2017 Seabold "Pelio Vineyard - East Ridge" Monterey County Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $45)

SKU #1527820 95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark A lighter yet tremendously dynamic style of Pinot Noir, this boling begins with hibiscus, pomegranate, wild thyme, bay leaf and a hint of eucalyptus on the nose. Those forest-foor elements carry into the palate, where crisp raspberry favors are enhanced by juniper and pine-needle freshness. *Editor's Choice* (MK) Inner quote mark (5/2020)

Outer quote mark Pale ruby-purple, the 2017 Pinot Noir Pelio East Ridge gives up dust, smoked cranberries, underbrush, fragrant earth and orange peel aromas with notions of potpourri and wild blackberries. Light to medium-bodied, it's intensely flavored but delicately styled with silky, earth-laced fruits and juicy freshness, finishing long and layered. Lovely! (EB) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

Here's a wine that truly captures the magic of Pinot Noir. This wine has all the aromatic complexity and intrigue you could ask for, and backs it up with a wonderfully vibrant, fresh, pure varietal expression on the palate. This tiny production Pinot Noir hails from one block, of one single vineyard high in the Santa Lucia Mountain range between the Salinas and Carmel Valleys. The soil at Pelio Vineyard is very thin, the vines grow down into fractured diatomaceous shale, basically an ancient seabed, lifted high into the mountains over many millennia. Near constant winds and proximity to the Pacific Ocean means that this is truly a cool-climate Pinot Noir and it shows is with a bright, translucent color in the glass, crunchy red berry fruits, lifted spices and floral aromatics. Flavors of raspberry, pomegranate, alpine strawberry meet a dusty, earthy, crushed rock quality streaks across the palate. Medium bodied, juicy, mouth-watering and so energized. In the finish, wild brambly tones, hints of spice, subtle leather. I love the contrast between the freshness and purity of the red fruit versus the more savory, leafy, stone, soil driven components. A truly fascinating Pinot Noir that will appeal to Burgundy drinkers as much as California enthusiasts. One of my favorite expressions of Pinot Noir in quite some time.
