Perfumed and silky, this red begins with aromas of violet and black currant, picking up hints of earth and spice on the palate. It's very elegant and lacy, with an attractive, spicy finish. Enjoyable now, but will improve. (BS)

A restrained nose of relatively austere but ripe and spicy black fruit aromas slide into sappy, lush and opulent if still firmly structured medium-bodied flavors that finish with real verve and excellent length. I like the ample Vosne character though this is presently quite backward and will require a few more years for the flavors to really blossom.

Deep ruby-red. Ripe aromas of black cherry, chocolate and sweet oak. Concentrated and chewy, with black fruits complicated by mineral notes and chocolatey torrefaction. Finishes with very good length and pronounced oakiness. (ST)

There are two separate cuvées of this wine: one made up of 25 year-old vines and the other now around 40 years of age. In 2002 there seems to be more mid-palate depth and structural integrity than is the norm for this easier-going wine, and the ’02 may well be the best Chaumes since the 1993. The nose offers up a lovely mélange of plummy, dark berry fruit, bitter chocolate, pretty soil tones, a touch of wild duck, nutmeg and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is medium-full and juicy, with lovely focus and balance, and really a very pretty kernel of fruit in the mid-palate. Good length and grip on the finish.
