2019 Domaine Faiveley Beaune 1er Cru "Clos de L'Eclu" (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1527041 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Aromas of plums, rich forest floor, warm spices and smoked meats introduce the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de l'Écu Monopole, a medium-bodied, bright and elegant wine that's satiny and melting, with lively acids and fine, powdery tannins. This is as fine a rendition of the Clos de l'Écu as I can remember tasting. Jérôme Flous told me that Faiveley began picking on September 9, finishing by the 20th, and that yields averaged out at around 35 hectoliters per hectare in white and a little less in red. Comparing the 2019 vintage to "a more concentrated version of 2010," he admires—as I do—its vibrant fruit tones and refined tannins, finding it more elegant than 2018. The quality of the red wines chez Faiveley is old news, and for more information on this firm's evolution I direct readers to my report published in the August 2020 Week 1 issue of The Wine Advocate. It's worth underlining, however, how good the whites are these days: Flous tells me that he now includes fûts from Damy and Chassin in the white wine barrel program, and in the last few vintages, I've found the wines' new oak component better and better integrated. Outer quote mark Clos de l'Ecu is a 2.37ha monopole, purchased from Jaboulet-Vercherre in 2003, which forms the upper portion of l’Ecu, just underneath the woods at the top. The site ripened fruit well in 2019, producing a lovely deep colour, dark fruit on the nose and a slightly savoury note. On the palate, it is tannic, structured and almost a bit rustic. The sweet fruit comes through on the finish. Drinking Window 2021 - 2039. (CC) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

89-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark mildly reduced nose still seems both fresh and ripe thanks to the excellent vibrancy of the nicely concentrated and tautly muscular flavors that possess a beguiling underlying tension that carries over to the youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This firmly structured effort will require at least a decade to reach its peak. Inner quote mark (1/2021)

89-91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2019 Beaune Clos de l’Ecu 1er Cru, raised in 30% new oak for 24 months, was quite backward on the nose, showing tightly wound, slightly tertiary red berry fruit. The palate has good structure, quite savory in style, and a lightly spiced finish. This is a fine Beaune to enjoy over the next 8–10 years. (NM) Inner quote mark (12/2020)

K&L Notes

89-92pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Dense mid purple, with a rather toasty nose, this probably needs racking. Not too massive, a little bit lactic, good length, balanced acidity, fresh raspberry and some sweeter red cherry notes. Picked early, at 13.5%. Tasted: November 2020."
