The 2013 Volnay Vendanges Selectionées comes from a selection of 50-year-old vines on more calcareous soils that tend to produce more 'vin de garde' fruit than vines used for the Volnay Village. There was no 2012 produced by the domaine While it is adorned with similar scents as the Village, there is a greater sense of depth and intensity on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, more backbone than the Village Cru and a sense of symmetry toward the finish. Give this 5-6 years in bottle before broaching, and you will have a very serious Volnay on your hands. (NM)

The 2013 Volnay 'Vendanges Selectionées' from Domaine Michel Lafarge is another stellar example of the vintage, and again, quite red fruity in personality this year. The bouquet offers up a fine constellation of wild strawberries, cherries, woodsmoke, lovely minerality, fresh herbs and a dollop of nutskins. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and nicely reserved in personality, with a fine core, lovely soil signature and a long, tangy and moderately tannic finish. This will be outstanding with sufficient bottle age.

This is almost as elegant and a bit more complex with similar aromas that offer more spice elements. The refined and pure middle weight flavors exude plenty of minerality before concluding in an equally complex finale where a touch of warmth appears just at the end. The supporting tannins are evident but in this case they appear to be slightly more mature.

Richer and riper on the nose than the village wine. Core and bitter cherries. Absolutely bone dry, cries out for time, but it will surely make delightful old bones. 17/20 points (JR)
