2017 Trinity Hill "Homage" Syrah Hawke's Bay (Previously $80)

SKU #1525349 98 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This is in such elegant, suave and regal form in 2017 with white pepper-dusted, fresh summer berries, graphite, deeper woody-spice notes of cardamom and cloves and swirling perfume. The palate has a super fresh, fleshy and detailed feel with a wealth of bright, juicy and crunchy fruit on offer with such fresh, juicy and succulent tannins, carrying bright, lively blackberries with precision and intent. Impressive. Inner quote mark (9/2019)

97 points Sam Kim

Outer quote mark Another exceptional offering under this iconic label; the impressively complex bouquet shows Black Doris plum, blueberry compote, violet, thyme and almond characters. The palate exhibits immense depth and power, while remaining poised and classically structured, splendidly framed by layers of fine, polished tannins. Magnificent and engaging. Inner quote mark (5/2019)

96 points Bob Campbell

Outer quote mark Intensely perfumed syrah with violet, floral, pepper, spice and dark plum and berry flavours, together with a seasoning of smoky oak. A youthful, elegant, firmly-structured red that's accessible now but shows impressive cellaring potential. Certainly a wine to watch. Inner quote mark (6/2019)

94 points Decanter

Outer quote mark A fragrant and exotic Syrah (maybe that's the 4% Viognier) filled with aromas of cracked pepper and Szechuan spices in addition to layers of black cherry, violet and even a hint of roasted coffee. A mid-weight, elegant style that seems to effortlessly capture both freshness and the fine-textured, stone-licking tannins synonymous with the Gravels. Lively, perfumed and alluring. Get a bottle! (RG) Inner quote mark (10/2019)

94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark While it's hard to get past the heavy bottle in the age of climate change, this producer's latest vintage of its top wine is a skillfully crafted drop. Less overtly spicy than the previous vintage, it opens with bright red fruit, florals, flecks of black olives, warm pavement and peppery spice. Things get more serious on the palate with a lovely powdery texture and taut, fine tannins. Minerals and spices abound amid the crunchy red fruit. Those tannins indicate a long life ahead. *Cellar Selection* (CP) Inner quote mark (5/2020)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Not as dense or powerful as some previous vintages, the 2017 Homage Syrah instead boasts soaring aromas of violets, cracked pepper, black cherries and tapenade. It's only medium-bodied yet concentrated and silky in feel, with a long, elegant finish framed by softly dusty tannins. This complex, approachable wine should drink well for a decade or more. (JC) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

When it comes to New Zealand Syrah, it doesn't get any better than this. The 2017 Trinity Hill Homage is sourced entirely from the best parcels in New Zealand's most acclaimed terroir, Gimblett Gravels. Trinity Hill was one of the pioneering producers of Gimblett Gravels as one of only a few wineries who put down vines there in the early '80s. Today there are over 30 producers who have recognized the exceptional fruit the site produces, but Trinity Hill remains its finest producer. I poured this for our Redwood City staff blind, and everyone assumed it was a top producer from the Northern Rhône. With soaring aromas of cracked black pepper, dried rosemary, and charcoal, the typicity and quality on display here are off the charts. The fruit delivers fully on the palate with black sour plum, candied black cherry, and blackberry fruit that washes over the palate with richly concentrated flavors. After a couple of hours in the decanter, the tannins were soft and plush, showing just at the finish. Incredible now, but certainly worth the effort of cellaring, this is an exceptional vintage of Homage from Trinity Hill. This is the best Syrah being produced in New Zealand today, full stop.
