2018 Penfolds "Bin 704" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1525098 96 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This is the first vintage of the Australian producer’s foray into Napa Valley. It is tightly structured yet supple, bursting in bright currant and strawberry flavors. Savory components of sage, dried herb and black pepper dot the palate alongside silky tannins and chocolate-laced richness. A fresh touch of blood orange arises on the finish. *Cellar Selection* (VB) Inner quote mark (2/2021)

95 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Bright and vibrant in the glass with deep, dark aromas of black plum grasped in a tight-fisted blackberry glove. While the body is fashionably lean, the initially tight flavours relax to a plush embrace. More is revealed as the wine opens up in the mouth: sumptuous fruit that remains firm and politely behaved, a chew of tobacco and deliberate oak tannins that bite in the tail. 95 points James Halliday

Outer quote mark In what Peter Gago describes in his inimitable fashion as 'the hemispherical inverse of Bin 407' this is a magnificently crafted Napa cabernet that offers allure from day one, yet great promise in years to come. Napa provenance is avowed confidently in a rich, ripe and succulent core of generous blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, even a hint of licorice. Fruit and high-class French oak tannins unite to wonderful effect in a refined and confident structure, meshing harmoniously with fruit and drawing out a very long finish. *Gold* (TS) Inner quote mark (2/2021)

Outer quote mark A beautiful, aromatic wine with blackcurrant, cool fruit and hints of minerals and tar. Full-bodied, yet polished and really well manicured. Long and creamy. Shows tension, energy and refinement. Drink after 2024, but so beautiful already. Hard not to drink. Inner quote mark (2/2021)

93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 704 is rich and effusive, with all of the personality of the vintage on display. Sweet spice, mocha, dark raspberry jam, licorice and leather all take shape in the glass. Medium in body, with bright acids, the 2018 will drink well with minimal cellaring. It is another super attractive wine in this new lineup from Penfolds, but it is also a bit tight and in need of a few years in bottle. (AG) Inner quote mark (2/2021)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with vibrant Morello cherries, crushed black and red currants and boysenberries scents, followed by touches of cedar chest, menthol, dried roses and black olives. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has an approachable, grainy texture and a lively line lifting the black berry flavors on the bright, pure finish. (LPB) Inner quote mark (2/2021)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Aged for 16 months in French oak (40% new). Glossy, flawless nose where the fruit is pristine, pampered even. Pulls of the trick of being super-ripe yet satisfyingly savoury. Holds its alcohol with more integration than the Bin 149, for me. No herbal hints here – in fact, the fruit has all the limelight, while any complexity is still waiting in the wings. A great pleasure to drink now, albeit at the expense of future potential. 17++/20 points (RH) Inner quote mark (7/2021)

A stunning debut for this wine. Though this project was decades in the making, it was a perfect coincidence that the fantastic 2018 vintage in Napa lined up with these first Penfolds releases. The vintage really allows the classic flavors of Napa to show through, powerful varietal typicity, with crème de cassis, plum, cedar, loamy earth and leather. The wine has plenty of power and concentration but still feels vibrant and fresh. The all French oak, the majority of it seasoned, also allows the sense of place and season shine through without winemaking artifact or over-ripeness eclipsing any of the important details. Penfolds really drew on their age old pedigree here and didn't try to over-make the wine. It has a very natural, effortless feel to it that works very nicely.
