K&L Notes

Originally founded in 1931 in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Brotte family has since combined four different Rhône estates under the Maison Brotte emblem. Working sustainably and certified Terra Vitis, they express each of their terroirs beautifully. Maison Brotte is managed by Laurent Brotte, grandson of the founder, along with his wife and sons. Domaine Grosset was owned by Laurent's father-in-law, and the Grosset family was very active in establishing the Cairanne appellation. Soils are sandy clay with stones and grey marl. The "Création Grosset" is composed of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan and is a classic rendition showing generous fruit and a silky structure. A perfect introduction to the region and this producer.

Over the last few years, we've witnessed an explosion of great wines from the new Cairanne AOC, and this wine, with its fresh, harmonious aromatics and exuberant array of fleshy red and black fruits, savory garrigue, lifted acidity, and well-knit tannins will more than please many a Rhône-ravenous appetite. With such delightful verve and jaunty appeal, at under $15, it's an amazing steal!

This wonderful new arrival manages to combine richness of fruit and depth of flavor with classic Rhône character and ample, ripe tannins. A pleasant touch of rusticity is enveloped by opulence, which makes for an outstanding daily red that pairs nicely with a wide variety of dishes. I can attest that this impressive Cairanne is especially good with lamb and roasted meat.

This tasty, bistro-weight red opens with aromas and flavors of fresh strawberry, sweet black cherry, and ripe plum. The wine is medium weight, lively, and fresh but retains a touch of earthy old-school charm with its wild herb and baking spice-infused finish. This is exactly the type of food friendly and palate refreshing bottle to have handy for picnics, BBQs, simple lunches, and when friends pop over.

As K&L's Rhône Buyer, I live for grape varieties like Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and Mourvèdre. Well, look at this... the Brotte Cairanne has all of those! And from one of my favorite newer Cru appellations, as well. The Brotte Grosset is generously fruited like most Cairanne, with a beautiful purity of red fruits. A compote of strawberries, cherries, and raspberries flow across the palate with lovely complimentary notes of anise and spices. With its lusty fruit, supple tannins, and inviting price point, this checks all my daily drinker boxes as well. Great for weeknight dishes like a rotisserie chicken, a burger and fries, or that one-pot sauce and pasta meal you just threw together. So versatile and so fun!
