Marqués de Cáceres has long been lauded for its classically styled wines since they tended to shy away from long wood aging, but they were one of the first "modern" wineries in Rioja back in the 1970s when the estate was first established. Enrique Forner—a Bordeaux transplant—and Emile Peynaud brought a clear Bordeaux stamp to their Rioja bottlings, hence the "modern" label by critics of the day.
