SKU #1522722 93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Brilliant garnet. Fresh raspberry, cherry and baking spices on the highly fragrant nose. In a silky, energetic style, offering intense red fruit and spicecake flavors that turn deeper and pick up a smoky quality on the back half. Smooth and seamless on the impressively long, gently tannic finish, which features a sappy red berry liqueur note and resonating spiciness. Raised in one-year-old and neutral French oak barrels. Outer quote mark Light in the glass, this is a delicious wine, starting with aromas of blistered strawberry, creamy rose petals and a touch of hibiscus. There's a compelling snap to the sip, where Montmorency cherry and strawberry flavors are wrapped in light leather and game, finishing on a fruit-punch kick. (MK) Inner quote mark (5/2020)

K&L Notes

The two standard bearers for the Edna Valley wine scene are Talley Vineyards and Stephen Ross, helmed by Brian Talley and Stephen Ross Dooley respectively. These two have pioneered the region and established the best vineyards while crafting the areas best wines. Though not as well known as Talley, Stephen Ross Dooley has real winemaking cred. He spent 10 years making wine in Napa Valley, two years abroad, and seven years in the Edna Valley before launching is own winery; all backed by his degree in enology from UC Davis. His wines may fly a bit under the radar but they've helped define the region.

While best known for his Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Stephen also makes small lots of wines from other top vineyards. This is his fourth release of the "Bee Sweet Vineyard" Grenache. I was thrilled to try this wine for the first time as it has traditionally only been sold through the winery. The climate here is classically Mediterranean which is perfectly suited for Grenache. The wine is aged 18 months in one year old and neutral French oak casks. The goal is to capture the purity of the fruit. It's silky elegant with hints of black cherry, roasted herbs, and a hint of pepper. It's medium bodied on the palate and tastes like a fresh field of strawberries. This style of Grenache pairs perfectly with grilled or braised meats like beef, pork, or game. Grenache holds up well to hearty dishes like cassoulet and it's a good match for less spicy styles of Asian cooking. A mere 100 cases produced and we're offering it at an "Insiders Only" price!
