2019 Alma de Cattleya Sonoma County Chardonnay

SKU #1522684 92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This line of wine by Bibiana González Rave punches above its weight. This bottling starts with aromas of tight pear, jasmine, white rose and Pink Lady apple on the nose. The palate is very tight in structure, yet delivers joyous whiteflower flavors and racy acidity. *Editors’ Choice* (MK) Inner quote mark (6/2021)

Outer quote mark Lots of ripe orchard fruits, melon, and honeysuckle notes emerge from the 2019 Chardonnay, a medium-bodied, impressively textured, balanced beauty that sells for a song. It's well worth enjoying over the coming couple of years. Inner quote mark (7/2021)

Connoisseurs Guide

Outer quote mark This well-made cameo of fancier, more pricey wines is ready to drink today yet has the underlying energy to hold well for a few years and is very invitingly priced. It is about middle in volume and medium-full in body with a nice bit of early roundness on the palate, and its Golden Delicious apple flavors mirror the keen but slightly low-key aspects of the nose and are very nicely filled out by a streak of crème brûlée oakiness. *Good Value* Inner quote mark (5/2021)

K&L Notes

Bibiana González Rave, a Columbian-born California winemaker who studied in Bordeaux and worked in Burgundy, Alsace, and Cognac, crafts two tiers of wine: Her Cattleya wines are named for the national flower of her native Colombia, and her more value priced "Alma de Cattleya" wines are named for the "spirit" of those top-tier Sonoma and Napa Valley wines. Tasting notes from the producer: "The fruit for our Chardonnay is grown in vineyards between the Russian River and the Sonoma Coast. The coastal influence provides the right balance of acidity, texture, softness, and length. Fruit is harvested by hand at night and is immediately taken to the winery for gentle pressing. The juice is transferred to both neutral barrels and new barrels after settling overnight to start its fermentation. The wine is then aged in neutral barrels and stainless steel tanks for 11 months before going to bottle."
