2018 Gibbs "Three Clones" St. Helena Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1521580 94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Very pretty sweet-berry and bark character to the blueberry and black-cherry aromas that follow through to a medium to full body with firm, silky tannins and a creamy finish. Nicely crafted and balanced. Very drinkable now and beautiful, but best after 2023. Inner quote mark (1/2021)

91 points Decanter

Outer quote mark A bushel of inviting blue and purple fruits on the nose. The palate is spongy and sweet but with impressive balance and complexity at this price point. The finish ends with fine tannins and beaming acidity. Highly recommended; a truly fantastic value. (ML) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

Maybe you've heard of Gibbs. Maybe you haven't. If not, this may well be the best value bottle of Napa Cab you've never heard of! In an era when the price of Napa Cabernet continues to rocket skyward, the chances of finding something of merit in the price point is a rarity. Most folks who used to bottle Napa Cab in this price point have been forced out, their wines now labelled "North Coast" or some other broad appellation where fruit is more affordable. However, the 2018 Gibbs "Three Clones" Cab is entirely estate grown in St. Helena. The family have farmed the land since the early 1950s. The estate nestles in a small but sublime valley of its own at the base of Howell Mountain. The wines are now being made by 3rd generation vintner Spencer Gibbs under his father Craig's watchful eye. In a region so full of pomp and circumstance, Gibbs is a very understated property that simply lets their wine do the talking. And wow, the 2018 Cab has plenty to say! Lashings of blueberry, cassis, bramble and mocha notes pervade the nose and flood the palate. The wine has beautifully pure fruit and a polished texture that belies its modest price point. Deep, earthy tones of loamy soil and warm stone give depth, hints of cigar box give nice varietal typicity. Simply outstanding for the money. We've previously had this wine in our Staff Picks selections at K&L and we're thrilled to see them picking up some well deserved critical acclaim! I highly recommend checking out this wine and I'm sure this will become a go-to for many of you in the future.
