2018 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru "Mitans" (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1521240 93-95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2018 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has an absolutely glorious bouquet of perfumed black cherries, blueberry, potpourri and light violet aromas that are understated and yet focused and delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with a precise opening, and very harmonious and sensual. Pure, mineral-driven red fruit defines the effortless finish. Stunning. (NM) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

94 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Noble reduction is often a feature of the Lafarge reds at this stage in their development, but it's nothing to sorry about, given how they mature in bottle. This sweetly oaked Premier Cru comes from two parcels totally 0.4ha in the lower part of the village on stony, brown soils close to the border with Pommard. Floral, textured and focused with a spine of tannin and acidity. Drinking Window 2024 - 2032. (TA) Inner quote mark (10/2019)

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Mitans is built for the long haul, unwinding in the glass with notes of cassis, dark chocolate, sweet soil tones and potpourri. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with an ample chassis of rich, powdery tannins and lively balancing acids. Frédéric Lafarge and his daughter Clothilde—who is increasingly involved at the estate—were on fine form during my early-December visit to the domaine, and they have every reason to be, as these are quite simply some of the finest wines produced in all the Côte d'Or in the 2018 vintage. "We debudded aggressively in spring to control yields," Lafarge told me, adding that the team refrained from working in the vineyards in the summer afternoons when the weather was warmest and the vines at their most stressed, as well as retaining a maximum of foliage to shade the fruiting zone from the intense sunshine. "Burgundy's rhythms are changing, and we have to adapt," Frédéric concluded, but he seems energized rather than daunted by the challenge. The 2018 portfolio chez Lafarge is deep, concentrated, exquisitely elegant and—above all—lively and dynamic, in a vintage where the nexus of all four of those qualities is rare, for all the lovely wines that have been produced. I hope to devote some time to a longer piece on this benchmark estate, but for now, as the accompanying tasting notes will make clear, all these wines come warmly recommended. Outer quote mark The 2018 Mitans is another excellent wine in the making from Domaine Lafarge in this vintage. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a youthful blend of black cherries, black plums, French roast, pigeon, a very complex base of soil tones, woodsmoke and a nice touch of bitter chocolate in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite transparent in profile, with a lovely core of sappy black fruit, excellent focus and grip and fine-grained tannins perking up the long, complex and vibrant finish. Another absolutely superb bottle in the making. (Drink between 2030-2065) Inner quote mark (12/2019)

91-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark A wonderfully pure, airy and attractively fresh nose requires plenty of swirling to reveal the spicy red currant cherry, floral and herbal tea scents. There is excellent intensity to the mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess a supple mid-palate that is almost delicate while displaying fine length on the silky-textured finish. A classic Mitans of lace and grace. *Burghound Outstanding!!* Inner quote mark (4/2020)

This is on the tighter side though with good fruit intensity, some myrtilles, and showing the oak a touch more. Still a very good wine but not one of Lafarge’s showstoppers in 2018. Tasted: November 2019."
